MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team traveled to Ames, Iowa on Sunday, April 17, to conclude its 2022 regular-season. The Mountaineers fell, 6-1, to the No. 30 Cyclones, at the Ames High School Tennis Courts.
 
"We competed with good energy today and found a way to bounce back into doubles after a slower start, which wasn't easy against Iowa State," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "Credit to the Cyclones, they were loud and came out with everything they had at the start of doubles. Now, we are shifting our focus to the Big 12 Championship in four days.
 
It is important that we continue to build with this momentum and find ways to better secure our game play. There's a chance we may face Iowa State again in the tournament and I'm looking for us to learn from this match and take leaps forwards, between now and the first round of the tournament."
 
West Virginia (7-15, 0-8 Big 12) dropped the doubles point, after Iowa State (15-5, 4-5 Big 12) began their 6-0 run. No. 73 pair of freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang came up short to Christin Hsieh and Thasaporn Naklo, 6-4.
 
The remaining two pairs fell, 6-2, to the Cyclones, given the No. 30-ranked team a one-up going into singles play.  
 
In the No. 4 spot, sophomore Momoko Nagato finished first with a, 6-3, 6-2, loss to Anna Kuearum Supapitch.
 
ISU's ranked singles players claimed the next two victories for the Cyclones. Leading off with, No. 56 Thasaporn Naklo defeated senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia, 6-3, 6-2. Next up, freshman Kendall Kovick dropped the match to No. 91 Ange Oby Kajuru, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Chang, in the No. 3 spot, fell, 6-1, in the first set to Miska Kadleckova, but went toe-to-toe with the Cyclone in the second set. Kadleckova outlasted the junior, 7-5, in the second set, to take Iowa State's lead to 5-0.
 
With two matches left, Bossi dropped the match, 6-4, 6-1, to Chie Kezuka, before freshman Tantiana Lipatova helped the Mountaineers avoid the sweep. The freshman came up short, 6-4, in the first set, but battled back, 6-5, in the second set against Sofia Cabezas. Lipatova took the match against the Cyclone by retirement in the second set.
