WVU Edged Out by No. 12 OSU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team played host to No. 12 Oklahoma State on Friday, April 8, to kick off their last regular-season homestand of the 2022 spring slate. The Mountaineers fell, 7-0, to the Cowgirls at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown.
 
"We wanted to come out today, after last weekend's matchups, and we did okay today," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "Credit to Oklahoma State, they'll most likely competing for the Big 12 Championships. But, there's nothing to hang our heads on today. Our mentality is strong after today's matchup and we can move forward with confidence."
 
West Virginia (7-14, 0-7 Big 12) went into singles play with a disadvantage, after the Cowgirls (15-3, 5-1 Big 12) claimed the doubles point. Pair of senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia and freshman Tatiana Lipatova finished first, as they fell, 6-2, to Ooona Orpana and Martina Zerulo.
 
Next up, No. 19-ranked OSU doubles pair of Lisa Riouz and Ayumi Miyamoto defeated freshman No. 68 Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Cowgirls.
 
Sophomore Momoko Nagato and freshman Kendall Kovick's match against No. 66 Mhai Sawangkaew and Dariya Detkovskaya was 3-4, before going abandoned.
 
During singles, in the No. 2 slot, Kovick fell to No. 39-ranked Sawangkaew, 6-1, 6-2, to start off the OSU sweep. Next up, Orpana claimed the match with a, 6-4, 6-1, win over Nagato, before Bovolskaia fell, 6-0, 6-2, to No. 26 Rioux to secure the match for the Cowgirls.
 
In the No. 3 spot, Chang battled neck-and-neck against Martina Zerulo in both sets. The junior fell, 7-5, during the first set, followed by a back-and-forth second set. Ultimately, the Cowgirl outlasted Chang, 7-6(4) to notch another point for OSU.
 
With two matches left, Lipatova fell in two-straight sets, 7-5, 2-6, to Miyamoto, before Bossi went three sets against Miyamoto in the No. 6 slot. Bossi claimed the first set, 6-4, before the Cowgirl battled back, 6-2, to force the tie-break. In the final set, Bossi was outlasted, 10-4.

Looking Ahead
West Virginia concludes its home regular-season schedule on Sunday, April 10, as No. 2 Oklahoma makes its way to Morgantown. First serve against the Sooners is set for 11 a.m. ET. The Mountaineers will recognize senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia prior to the start of the match.
